(서울=연합뉴스) 김정진 기자 = LG화학이 4년 전 인도생산법인 LG폴리머스 공장에서 발생한 가스누출 사고와 관련해 200억원 상당의 인도적 지원을 약속한 데 대해 현지 피해자단체들이 보다 적극적인 보상을 촉구했다. 

LG폴리머스가스피해자협회 등 피해자단체는 15일 오전 한국 환경보건시민센터와 함께 온라인 기자회견을 열고 이같이 주장했다.

이들은 회사의 지원에 대해 "주민 2만명의 고통에 비하면 충분하지 않다"며 모든 피해자에게 기간·진료 범위의 제한 없이 무상치료를 제공하고 그동안 피해자가 부담해 온 의료비를 상환하라고 요구했다.

아울러 피해 마을인 벤타카푸람을 위해 1천억 루피(한화 1조6천560억원) 규모의 기금을 조성하고 사망자 유족과 가장 큰 피해를 본 마을 주민에게 정규직 일자리를 달라고도 했다.스리니바스 피해자협회 사무국장은 "사고 당시 주민 2만명이 대피했다. 최소 11명이 죽고 수천 명이 중상을 입었다"며 하지만 회사가 제대로 된 치료를 제공하지 않았다고 주장했다.

또 최근 신학철 LG화학 부회장이 인도 현지를 방문한 것과 관련해서는 "사고 현장도 피해자단체도 만나지 않았고 언론을 통해 발표한 지원 내용도 피해자단체에는 전달되지 않았다"며 대화를 요청했다.

피해자단체에 따르면 2020년 5월 7일 LG폴리머스 공장에서는 유독성인 스타이렌 가스 818t이 누출됐다. 가스에 노출된 이들은 3도 화상을 입어 수년간 피부이식 수술을 받거나 천식 등 호흡기 질환, 발달장애 등을 겪고 있다는 게 단체 측 주장이다.

이들은 "LG화학은 법원 판결을 기다리지만 말고 적어도 사고 후 5년이 되는 2025년 5월 7일까지 자발적으로 임시 보상을 해야 한다"고 말했다.

In addition, a fund worth 100 billion rupees (KRW 1.656 trillion) was created for the affected village of Ventakapuram, and the families of the deceased and the village residents who suffered the greatest damage were requested to provide full-time jobs. Srinivas Victims Association The secretary-general said, "At the time of the accident, 20,000 residents were evacuated. At least 11 people died and thousands were seriously injured," but claimed that the company did not provide proper treatment.

In addition, regarding LG Chem Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol's recent visit to India, he requested dialogue, saying, "I did not meet the accident site or the victims' group, and the support announced through the media was not delivered to the victims' group."

According to a victims' group, 818 tons of toxic styrene gas leaked from the LG Polymers plant on May 7, 2020. The group claims that those exposed to the gas suffer third-degree burns, undergo skin graft surgery for years, suffer from respiratory diseases such as asthma, and developmental disabilities.

They said, “LG ​​Chem should voluntarily provide temporary compensation by at least May 7, 2025, five years after the accident, rather than waiting for the court ruling.”
