지구촌 대표적인 환경사건 피해자들의 이야기를 듣는 온라인 증언대회

• 프로그램: 

 1970년부터 시작된 지구의날이 올해로 54회째를 맞습니다. 환경보건시민센터(Eco-Health)와 아시아직업환경피해자권리네트워크(ANROEV)는 이날 지구촌 곳곳에서 발생해온 환경참사 피해자들의 목소리를 드는 온라인 증언대회를 엽니다. 

 미나마타병, 체르노빌과 후쿠시마 핵참사, 보팔참사와 같이 수십년전에 발생했지만 아직도 피해가 계속되는 환경참사부터 기후위기, 석면암, 가습기살균제참사, LG화학 인도참사와 같이 현재 진행중인 환경사건 등 대표적인 지구촌 환경참사의 생존, 유족 피해자들의 이야기를 직접 듣는 자리가 사상 처음으로 마련됩니다. 

 1956년부터 알려진 대표적인 환경참사인 일본 미나마타병 사건은 70년이 다 되어가지만 아직도 수은중독에 의한 피해규명이 제대로 되지 않아 피해자들의 소송이 진행중입니다. 사토 히데키(Sato Hideki)는 손과 얼굴 근육에 부분마비가 오는 미나마타병 환자입니다. 다른 피해자 5명과 함께 민사소송을 제기해 1심에서 승소했지만 패소한 피해자들이 있어 항소중입니다. 

 1984년 12월3일 새벽에 발생한 인도 보팔참사의 현장은 올해 40년이 되지만 그대로 방치된 상태입니다. 미국의 농약회사 유니언 카바이드가 일으킨 보팔참사는 MIC라는 독극물로 수만명의 보팔시민들이 죽고 다친 대참사입니다. 피해자들은 올해 5-6월 미국을 방문해 전역을 돌면서 참상을 알리고 유니언 카바이드를 인수한 미국의 화학기업 다우케미컬의 책임을 촉구합니다. Farhat Jahan과 Bati Bai의 이야기에 귀를 기울여 주세요. 

 벨기에 사람 에릭 존커레(Eric Jonckheere)는 화물운송비행기 조종사입니다. 그는 2021년 석면노출에 의해 발생하는 암인 악성중피종이 발병했습니다. 어릴적 선친이 다니던 석면시멘트회사 에터니트(ETERNIT)의 사옥에 살면서 석면에 노출되었기 때문입니다. 그동안 에릭의 부모와 형제2명도 악성중피종으로 사망했습니다. 그의 이야기를 들어보세요.

 올가(Olga)는 우크라이나의 과학자였습니다. 1986년 터진 체르노빌 핵참사로 방사능에 노출된 그녀는 유방암에 걸렸고 자녀가 있는 스위스에서 수술을 받았습니다. 그러나 수많은 우크라이나 사람들이 방사능 피해로 죽음을 맞았습니다. 

 라타(Latha)는 인도 중동부의 해안도시 비샤카파트남에 삽니다. 2020년 5월7일 그녀는 10살 딸을 잃었습니다. 그녀의 집에서 200여미터 떨어진 곳에 있던 한국기업 엘지화학 인도공장에서 새벽에 뿜어져 나온 스티렌 가스 때문입니다. 80톤의 발암물질 독가스누출로 지금까지 최소 26명이 사망하고 500여명이 병원에 입원했으며 2만명이 대피해야 했습니다. 참사발생 4년이 되었지만 엘지화학은 피해자들에게 아무런 배보상을 하지 않고 있습니다. 제2의 보팔참사라 불리는 이유입니다. 

 모하메드 푸루간(Mohamed Furugan)은 인도양의 섬나라 몰디브 주민입니다. 30대 초반인 그는 조국이 기후위기로 바닷물 속으로 잠겨가는 상황을 목도하고 있습니다. 지구촌 사람들이 이구동성으로 기후위기를 말하지만 원인을 해결하기 위한 탄소감소를 위한 노력은 미미합니다. 다급한 그의 이야기를 들어보세요. 

 김태종 씨는 4년 전 부인을 잃었습니다. 신세계 이마트에서 판 가습기살균제 때문입니다. 10년 넘도록 병원으로 오가며 투병했고 목을 절개해 산소발생기를 넣었지만 끝내 일어나지 못했습니다. 이렇게 가습기살균제로 목숨을 잃은 피해자는 전체 2만명으로 추산되며 2024년 4월 현재까지 신고된 사망자는 모두 1,853명이나 됩니다. 

 환경피해자들의 증언을 듣고 서울대학교 백도명 명예교수, 세계보건기구 (전)국장 김록호 박사, ANROEV 코디네이터 나디아(Nadia) 등 전문가들의 멘트로 이 프로그램은 마무리 됩니다. 많은 관심바랍니다.  

• 이 프로그램은 태어나자마자 가습기살균제에 의한 천식을 앓았던 김동후 씨의 사회와 부분 통역으로 진행됩니다. 그는 올해 2월 고등학교를 졸업한 학생입니다. 벨기에 석면암 피해자 에릭도 앞부분을 공동 사회자로 참여합니다. 

• 이 프로그램은 시간과 언어제약으로 인해 영어로 진행되며 일본어, 인도 텔루구어 등 일부사례 순차 통역됩니다. 피해자들의 이야기를 정리해 한글과 영어로 사후 보도자료를 냅니다. 참고하세요.

• Program:

 Earth Day, which began in 1970, celebrates its 54th anniversary this year. The Citizens' Center for Environmental Health (Eco-Health) and the Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims (ANROEV) are holding an online testimony contest to hear the voices of victims of environmental disasters that have occurred around the world.

∎ Representative global environmental issues such as environmental disasters that occurred decades ago but are still causing damage, such as Minamata disease, the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear disasters, and the Bhopal disaster, to ongoing environmental events such as the climate crisis, asbestos cancer, the humidifier disinfectant disaster, and the LG Chemical disaster in India. For the first time in history, we will be able to hear directly the stories of survivors and bereaved families of victims of the disaster.

∎ It has been almost 70 years since the Japanese Minamata disease incident, a representative environmental disaster known since 1956, but victims' lawsuits are still in progress as damage caused by mercury poisoning has not been properly identified. Hideki Sato is a patient with Minamata disease, which leaves him with partial paralysis of his hand and facial muscles. He filed a civil suit with five other victims and won in the first trial, but some victims lost and are appealing.

∎ The site of the Bhopal disaster in India, which occurred in the early morning of December 3, 1984, is 40 years old this year, but remains untouched. The Bhopal disaster caused by the American pesticide company Union Carbide was a catastrophe in which tens of thousands of Bhopal citizens were killed and injured by a poison called MIC. Victims visited the United States in May and June of this year and traveled throughout the country to publicize the tragedy and demand responsibility from Dow Chemical, an American chemical company that acquired Union Carbide.  Belgian Eric Jonckheere is a cargo plane pilot. In 2021, he developed mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. This is because he was exposed to asbestos as a child while living in the headquarters of ETERNIT, an asbestos cement company where his father worked. Meanwhile, Eric's parents and two brothers also died from malignant mesothelioma. Listen to his story.

 Olga was a Ukrainian scientist. Her exposure to radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 led to her developing breast cancer and undergoing surgery in Switzerland, where her children are from. However, many Ukrainians died from radiation damage.

 Latha lives in Vishakhapatnam, a coastal city in central-eastern India. On May 7, 2020 she lost her 10-year-old daughter. This is because of styrene gas that was released early in the morning from the Indian plant of the Korean company LG Chemical, which was located about 200 meters away from her house. So far, at least 26 people have died, more than 500 have been hospitalized, and 20,000 people have had to evacuate due to the leak of 80 tons of poisonous carcinogen gas. It has been four years since the disaster occurred, but LG Chemical has not paid any compensation to the victims. This is why it is called the second Bhopal disaster.

 Mohamed Furugan is a resident of the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. He is in his early 30s and is witnessing his country being submerged under sea water due to the climate crisis. People around the world unanimously talk about the climate crisis, but efforts to reduce carbon emissions to solve the cause are minimal. Listen to his urgent story.

 KIM Taejong lost his wife 4 years ago. This is because of the humidifier disinfectant sold at Shinsegae E-Mart. She battled the disease in and out of the hospital for over 10 years, and although an incision was made in her neck and an oxygen concentrator was put in, she was never able to wake up. It is estimated that 20,000 people have lost their lives due to humidifier disinfectants, and as of April 2024, a total of 1,853 deaths have been reported.

∎ After hearing the testimonies of environmental victims, the program concludes with comments from experts such as Professor Emeritus Baek Do-myeong of Seoul National University, Dr. Rok-ho Kim, (former) Director-General of the World Health Organization, and ANROEV Coordinator Nadia. • This program will be hosted by Dong-hoo Kim, who suffered from asthma caused by humidifier disinfectant right after birth, and will be partially interpreted. He is a student who graduated from high school in February of this year. Eric, a Belgian asbestos cancer victim, also co-hosts the first part.

• Due to time and language constraints, this program will be conducted in English, with sequential interpretation in some cases including Japanese and Indian Telugu. We summarize the victims' stories and issue a post-mortem press release in Korean and English. please refer to this.
