환경보건시민센터와 아시아다국적기업모니터링네트워크, 아시아직업환경피해자권리네트워크는 2일 서울 영등포구 옥시 한국지사 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 “옥시 영국 본사는 가습기살균제로 인한 소비자 집단 사망에 책임져라”고 촉구했다. 아시아다국적기업모니터링네트워크와 아시아직업환경피해자권리네트워크는 아시아 각국에서 다국적기업을 감시하고, 산업재해 및 환경피해문제와 관련해 피해자 권리를 위해 활동해온 국제시민단체다.

이날 기자회견에서 니나 라우 활동가는 “영국기업 옥시와 한국의 에스케이(SK), 롯데, 삼성, 엘지(LG) 등 다국적기업들의 횡포가 수많은 한국 소비자들을 죽음으로 몰았다. 이에 대해 분명히 책임을 물어야 한다”고 말했다. 카렌 후이 활동가는 “가습기살균제 참사에서 교훈을 제대로 얻지 못하면, 아시아 어느 나라에서라도 제2, 제3의 유사한 참사가 일어날 수 있다”고 지적했다.

이들은 “가장 책임이 큰 옥시가 조정안을 거부하면서 피해 문제가 교착상태에 빠졌다”며 “옥시 영국 본사가 문제 해결의 열쇠를 쥐고 있다”고 주장했다. 앞서 지난달 ‘가습기살균제 피해구제를 위한 조정위원회’는 피해자 지원을 위한 최종 조정안을 거부한 옥시 등을 제외하고 활동 기한을 연장하기로 한 바 있다.

이어 이들은 “옥시가 가습기살균제를 판매할 당시 외국인 사장이었던 거라브 제인이 한국 검경의 수사를 피해 도피 중이고 인터폴에 적색수배 상태라는 사실은 다국적기업들이 한 나라의 주권을 우습게 여기고 소비자 권리를 무시하는 행태”라며 “옥시 영국 본사와 거라브 제인은 속히 방한해 수사에 협조하고 법적 책임을 져라”고 촉구했다. 

이들은 또 “한국에서 전개되는 옥시 제품 불매운동을 국제사회로 확산해 다국적기업의 횡포를 알리고 소비자주권을 회복하기 위해 적극적으로 협력하고 연대할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 환경보건시민센터와 가습기살균제 피해자 단체들은 지난 4월25일 ‘옥시·애경 범국민 불매운동 선포식'을 열고, 이후 전국 대형할인마트 앞에서 손팻말을 들고 시위를 벌이는 등 불매운동을 진행하고 있다.

At the press conference, activist Nina Lau said, "The tyranny of multinational companies such as British company Oxy and Korea's SK, Lotte, Samsung, and LG has killed numerous Korean consumers. We must be held accountable for this," he said. Karen Hui, an activist, pointed out, "If lessons are not learned properly from the humidifier disinfectant disaster, a second and third similar disaster could occur in any Asian country."

"The issue of damage has been stalled as Oxy, who is most responsible, rejected the mediation plan," they said. "Oxy's UK headquarters holds the key to solving the problem." Earlier last month, the Coordination Committee for Humidifier Sterilizer Damage Relief decided to extend the deadline for activities except for Oxy, which rejected the final adjustment plan to support the victims.

"The fact that Loreb Jane, who was a foreign president when Oxy sold humidifier disinfectants, is fleeing the investigation of Korean prosecutors and is red-wanted in Interpol is a behavior that multinationals despise a country's sovereignty and ignore consumer rights," they said. 

They also said, "We will actively cooperate and unite to spread the boycott of Oxy products in Korea to the international community to inform the tyranny of multinational companies and restore consumer sovereignty." The Environmental Health Citizens' Center and humidifier disinfectant victims' groups held a "declaration ceremony for the boycott of Oxy and Aekyung" on April 25 and have since held a protest in front of a large discount mart nationwide with hand signs.
